The UK government was the first major economy to introduce legislation to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 but this process is already having impacts on the price of products and services for individuals and businesses across the UK. Though we can question the political motivations behind the green push and the accuracy in the ‘right’ way to achieve net zero it is apparent that action is needed now for businesses.

At SBM we have worked through the legislation to understand what it is saying to define the requirements for carbon producers directly from the source and the implications are huge:

If you are left with a carbon residue of 1000 tCO2e per year you would need 70 acres of woodland to offset 20% and gain control of your net zero journey and have a diverse carbon management portfolio.

The problem presented by this tricky residual carbon remainder and the need to offset (buying land to plant trees) has added to the increasing demand for land caused by economic growth, shortening supply lines, friction at borders alongside an appetite for lower food miles.

We all know that increased demand and reduced supply always causes an increase in prices. The same applies to land for woodland. Which means the door of opportunity for taking advantage of current government grants on Woodland Creation is rapidly closing.

As a result, SBM is offering a service to enable clients to gain direct access to Woodland Carbon Units as a means to offset. Giving you a chance to take control of your carbon offsetting requirements through:

  1. A search for suitable land for woodland
  2. Inspections of land and shortlisting opportunities
  3. Assessment and analysis of carbon offset potential
  4. Negotiation of terms
  5. Certification Avenues for the woodland in securing woodland carbon credits

The implications of net zero must surely be put to a referendum. In the meantime, we are left with the legislation and our recommendation to our clients is to be as ahead on carbon as they are with their core business.

We would be delighted to discuss your requirements.
